If your dog is sensitive about certain areas being stroked, then you’ll need to be mindful of this when your baby becomes more mobile, as a baby’s enthusiasm for stroking can easily overwhelm a shy dog. Facts About The Pet Trade You Probably Don’t Know
Posted on October 23, 2019 at 12:25 pm
If you’re not familiar with the pet trade, then you’re reading the right article. We will be covering a couple of little known facts that will certainly surprise you.
- The Pangolin is the most illegally traded animal in the world. The Pangolin is basically a scaly ant eater and it is traded for its unique scales, meat and various other body parts. This particular animal is more at risk than rhinos and tigers. Over 100,000 Pangolins are poached every year.
- The illegal pet trade is extremely lucrative and the only other trade that is more lucrative than it is the drug trade. This particular trade is the most popular in China but the United States is a close second. In the U.S, San Francisco is where the majority of illegal animals enter the country.
- Currently, there are more tigers on private property in the US than there are in the wild. According to estimations, there are only 3,000 tigers in the wild whereas there are about 5,000 pet tigers in the United States. Sadly, you can illegally purchase a tiger for as little as $300 which is much cheaper than many dogs and other domestic pets.
- Some of the most popular animals that are poached and traded every day include fresh water turtles, African elephants, rhinos, tigers, bears, leopards, parrots etc.
- The biggest reason for the extinction of many animals is the illegal wildlife trade. If this trade is not stopped, animals such as rhinos and elephants will become extinct within the next few years.
Sadly, there is a huge demand for exotic pets and this demand is what fuels the pet trade. The demand and availability of these animals has increased due to social media and the internet. Due to these technologies, people can easily advertise illegal animals for sale. Also, there are many viral YouTube videos showing exotic animals such as slow lorises consuming rice balls in a person’s home. As a result of this viral video, this animal became highly sought after and traded illegally.
The effects of illegal pet trading not only includes the eventual extinction of exotic animals but also causes great suffering for these animals. Many of them become badly injured while being caught and have to undergo horrendous conditions while being transported. In the end, when they are delivered to the buyer, they are often deeply traumatised, injured and extremely distressed.
There are, however, some good points and we know just how important it is to highlight positive news in this sector. for example, there is a lot more in terms of an overall pet trade show. Wherever you’re based in the world, there will be plenty of pet trade shows highlighting top products in the industry and the improvement being made in terms of manufacturing techniques.
To wrap things up, these are just few facts about the pet trade that you should know. So, before you try to purchase an exotic animal, take the time to become more informed about this trade and reconsider your actions.

How To Bathe Your Cat
Posted on May 24, 2018 at 11:45 am
It’s much easier to wash your cat in a kitchen or bathroom sink than bending over a bathtub. Following is a step-by-step procedure for the quick and painless cat bath:
- Fill the sink with about 2 or 3 inches of lukewarm water
- Wet the cat from the shoulders to the tail and apply shampoo.
- Just like your own hair, lather and rinse thoroughly
- Since most cats really hate having water splashed on their face, use a damp washcloth to gently clean your cat’s head.
- Use a cotton ball to clean inside the cat’s ears. Never put any kind of object in your cat’s ear.
- After a thorough rinsing, lift your cat onto a large towel and fold it around them.
- Rub as much water from their fur as possible
- Longhaired cats may require the use of a blow dryer, but only if the noise does not terrify them. Set it on low and see if the cat will tolerate it.

The problem with puppy lovers in the UK
Posted on March 27, 2018 at 8:34 am
There is a problem with ‘puppy lovers’ in the UK and you only need to visit your local dog kennel or RSPCA dog home to see that too many people are illegally breeding dogs and having puppies purely to make money. These newborn pups are often only ‘loved’ for the first few days of their lives but the new owners, who have not been vetted, soon decide to throw them out and leave them for dead. That’s the reality of the situation all to often, and we need to find ways to start loving all dogs, of all ages. There has certainly been a crackdown on illegal dog breeding but more can be done, and as a society we need to be more vocal and report issues as soon as we sense something may be wrong. If you eve witness someone treated a dog poorly or just get the gut feeling that something is not quite right, do not hesitate to call the RCSPA who are always on hand waiting or your call.

When is it okay to use a harness on your dog?
Posted on October 12, 2017 at 3:18 pm
If you have a dog that is strong and difficult to handle on a simple leash, you may want to consider trying a harness instead.
A harness will not only benefit your dog but it will help you too. When a string dog pulls too much on a simple leash that attaches to their neck collar can cause unnecessary strain on their neck, and can be hard for you to hold and handle.
A good harness should fit comfortably around your dog, fitting around and under each front leg, and around their abdomen. Using a harness provides you with more control and provides more comfort to your excited pooch when out for their daily walks.
You can get advice on the right harness for your dog by heading to your dog’s vets or at your local pet store where you can try them on you dog and see what works best for them.

Spotting a change in your dog’s behaviour
Posted on September 28, 2017 at 1:42 pm
As a dog owner, you will have realised how quickly your pet become part of the family. They have their own personality and particular behaviour traits. If you start to notice some obvious changes to their behaviour, it could be more serious than you think.
When dogs become unwell, they are unable to communicate how they feel, so as their owner it is hard to determine the severity of it. Some behaviour changes to look out for are increased lethargy, poor appetite and even aggressiveness.
You should always seek advice from your vets in regards to any behavioural changes and let the vet determine what is the cause. Leaving a serious illness untreated can lead to death. It is always better to get your dog’s health checked out, even if it turns out to be nothing serious.
On top of monitoring your dog’s behaviour, remember to stay on top of their yearly vaccinations and annual health check to keep them in top health.

How to set up a habitat for your first family rabbit
Posted on August 30, 2017 at 2:58 pm
If you have decided a rabbit is the right addition to your family, making sure you have a home for them is very important. We have outlined the basics of setting up a rabbit hutch at home:
A disposable base- While hutches are normally made from wood, you need to add an additional based that can be taken out and thrown away. This makes it easy to clean and keeps the hutch smelling more pleasant. A good base is newspaper, it will help absorb any urine and excrement from the rabbit and it can be removed and discarded easily.
Flooring- Rabbits love wood shavings in their home as it provides them with comfort around their cage.
Bedding area- Always create a distinct bedding area for your rabbit, this can be made from paper fibres or pelleted wheat fibres. Your rabbit may move the bedding around to make it just the way they like it.
Food and water- An essential! Keeping the water fresh daily and making sure the bottle is never empty. The food bowl and water bottle shouldn’t be kept in any difficult to reach places for your rabbit.
